Actualities of cultural cooperation between Hungary and Ukraine

The framework for the governmental level cultural relations are provided by the 1995 Agreement on Cultural, Educational and Scientific Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Hungary and the Government of Ukraine. The expert level relations of the Ministry of Human Resources and the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine are regulated by the Cooperation Action Plan for a certain period.

The main purpose of Hungary is to support and strengthen ties between Hungary and Ukraine, as good neighbors, and especially important partners for each other. Priority is given to the mutual development of cultural relations and acquaintance of the Ukrainian public with the Hungarian cultural heritage.

According to our cultural diplomatic policy we only initiate high level projects of international recognition in Ukraine, thus supporting our mission of cultural enrichment of the Ukrainian society and promoting European cultural values in Ukraine.

Based on the experience gained in 2011 during the incredibly successful International Year of Franz Liszt we managed to create a tradition in Ukrainian classical music life: on the occasion of the birth of composer Franz Liszt each year October 22nd we celebrate with a world-class concert. On this memorial evening at the National Philharmonic of Ukraine the public of Kyiv has the opportunity to hear an outstanding young pianist talent of Hungary.

Thanks to the Hungarian collector Mr. Tibor Csepei the audience can see an exhibition of painter and graphic artist Victor Vasarely, consisting of 120 paintings and 20 installations, in different cities of Ukraine since the end of October 2012 until the end of 2013. At present it is the largest Vasarely exhibition, that presents all periods of his artistic work, and also it includes the collage “Cosmos” (Whirlpool), which in 1982 was in space, as well as the largest exposed series of “Zebras”.

From 16 to 21 May 2013 in Kyiv for the fourth time the Festival of Contemporary Hungarian Cinema is organized with the help of producer agency ArtMedia. In earlier years, the Ukrainian audience was able to watch the films of Hungarian filmmakers presented at international film festivals. This year the festival is dominated by Hungarian romantic comedies.

In addition to the continuation of our traditional cultural programs, the next big project is to implement a series of programs as part of the “Days of Hungarian Culture.” This was agreed during negotiations of Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán and Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov on 27-28 March 2013 in Budapest, Hungary. We are looking forward for the Ukrainian side to conduct similar activities in Hungary as well.

During the cultural diplomatic activities we are striving to promote the building of contacts between the Hungarian and Ukrainian cultural institutions and participants of cultural life.
